Celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Marketers This September and October

From September 15th through October 15th marks Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month! September 15th is actually the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Following closely behind on September 16 and 18th are the independence days for Mexico and Chile respectively. Historically, this month has been called Hispanic Heritage Month, but with the term Latinx gaining more popularity for being gender inclusive as well as applying to those of Latin American heritage versus strictly those with Spanish-speaking ancestry.

To celebrate this month, we want to take this opportunity to spotlight some of our awesome contributors and employees of Hispanic and Latinx heritage!

“My maternal grandmother was a badass entrepreneur in Mexico who at one point ran 4 different businesses while raising 7 children on her own. She owned a grocery store, had a corn mill grinder she would rent out to the tortillerias so they could grind up the corn to make tortillas, she rented property where she grew sugar cane and sold it, and also raised and sold chickens and pigs to sell.

Career Highlights She’s Most Proud of:

  • Helping multiple businesses achieve their best YTD sales months ever during COVID
  • Founding Social Ads Made Simple in 2015

Michelle Dalton

Community Manager, DigitalMarketer

Heritage:

Mexican American, my mother is from Ciudad de Juarez

Michelle is the Community Manager for DigitalMarketer, where she builds relationships between our customers and creates an environment of collaboration to help their businesses flourish. After serving DigitalMarketer customers for the better part of a decade in various roles, she is an advocate for over 13,000 of our most engaged customers. Michelle is office-famous for crying when people show her cute baby animals.

“It sounds so silly, but there’s no template for how a certain heritage or culture looks. I’ve heard so many times in my life that I don’t look Mexican. What does a Mexican person look like? There is no one way to look, we all look different; some of us are redheads or blonde hair and blue eyed, while others have brown skin with thick dark hair. If we don’t fit into the stereotype, that doesn’t make us any less Latinx than others.”

Career Highlights You’re Most Proud of:

Honestly, my current position. It’s not something flashy or sparkly but it definitely feels like my skills, my personal and professional history, and my personality have all led me here, where I belong and thrive. Is it cocky to say I was made for this? Because I was made for this.

Gabriella (Gabi) Montemayor

Account Manager at DigitalMarketer

Heritage:

I’m a Texican through and through. My grandparents are originally from Mexico, but my parents were born and raised in South Texas.

Gabi Montemayor is a strategic account manager with over 8 years experience in advertising and marketing. She has spent most of her career in ad agencies, servicing clients in a variety of categories including financial services, home goods, and gaming. She has led holistic multi-million dollar campaigns across digital and traditional touchpoints that exceed benchmarks and drive revenue growth for her clients. Increased pressure and decreased budgets from clients led Gabi to look for a new role that could allow her to use that experience and empower smaller agencies to scale up and grow their client base—and where would be better than DigitalMarketer? She loves helping her partners expand, brainstorming new solutions to old problems, and providing resources that help partners service their clients even better.

“Although both of my parents are bilingual, I am not. I may not speak Spanish fluently, but I feel a very strong connection to my culture in so many other ways, like family values, traditions, and food, obviously. And maybe a curse word here and there.”

Career Highlights You’re Most Proud of:

  • I’ve made some really cool ads with some insanely smart people. One challenging but super rewarding project was a series of videos we did for Tuesday Morning called Buyer Stories. As part of a multi-layered campaign to inform, engage, and excite clients, we created a series of animated videos that told a really interesting story in a unique way.
  • My first advertising job was at a Hispanic agency in San Antonio, working with clients on all their Hispanic advertising. These were not translations of the general market work, but in-culture and in-language ad campaigns. I learned a lot about Latinx cultures that I didn’t know before, and also picked up the bizarre skill of being able to identify and articulate Spanish accents. In-culture matters just as much as in-language when it comes to advertising. The same can be said for people – culture identity is not determined by whether or not you speak the language, but how your culture shows itself in your everyday life. I’m proud of my heritage. I’m Mexican and American, through and through.

Jaime Santos

Lead Designer, Scalable Agency

Heritage:

Puerto Rican

From New York to Texas, Jaime has spent his last 8 years working on creative design and marketing campaigns for brands like Facebook, Lysol, Pepsi, and more. He recently joined DigitalMarketer and Scalable as the Lead Designer of the agency team shortly after relocating to Texas this past March.

Valentina’s has the best TexMex ever.

Career Highlights You’re Most Proud of:

Being hired by DigitalMarketer of course! But before my few months of tenure at DM, I loved having the opportunity to work on a series of illustrated animated educational videos for WeAreTeachers. It was a lot of fun being able to design all of the animations I got to use for the videos I put together, but it was just as fulfilling and rewarding to bring awareness about topics like learning disabilities, recycling and environment, social-emotional learning, and more.

Drew Rivera

Social Designer, The Scalable Company

Heritage:

Mexican/Spaniard

Drew is a 36-year-old creative who still holds on to a youthful heart. He has a beautiful wife, Christina, and the privilege of raising Jai, a handsome, energized 5-year-old together. Drew is an extrovert and loves meeting new people. His faith leads him as a husband, father, and friend, and creativity helps him add fun to each of those (we all want life to be fun). He loves greatly and loyalty runs deep, sometimes to a fault (we are all working on something).

“My Mexican heritage has been very heavy in family and family gatherings growing up, even inviting those outside the fold and treating them like family. Now I am thrilled to share that with my family and others from different backgrounds and cultures. The ability to grow and love those around us that are not like us is needed more now than ever. I am so blessed to know that my Mexican heritage planted that seed inside me at such a young age. Find someone different then you and show some love, invite them into the fold.”

Career Highlights:

Being hired by Digital Marketer/The Scalable Company. This has been by far the greatest mile marker in my journey as a creative. The ability to grow not only as a designer but as a marketer is what excited me to join the team and the company.
